How To Craft Specific and Detailed Prompts for Better ChatGPT Responses

Introduction:

In an era dominated by artificial intelligence, the power of AI models like ChatGPT has reshaped the way we approach various tasks.

From content generation to customer support, ChatGPT has become a versatile tool for businesses. However, harnessing its potential lies in the art of prompt engineering - the skill of crafting specific and detailed prompts.

In this article, we'll delve into the world of prompt engineering and uncover how you can unlock the full potential of ChatGPT.

1: Understanding Prompt Engineering

At the core of effective AI interaction is prompt engineering. But what exactly is prompt engineering? In simple terms, it's the process of formulating input prompts in a way that elicits the desired output from AI models like ChatGPT. It's like the bridge that connects your intent to the AI's response.

This connection between your input prompt and the generated output is where the magic happens.

Think of it as a conversation with a person, the quality of the conversation between the two of you, is directly linked to the kinds of questions you ask and the kinds of answers you receive.

To help get the answers you expect, the better your prompting (which are the instructions you give to ChatGPT), the better your answers will be.

As with any technology, there are challenges. ChatGPT might produce irrelevant or off-topic responses or it might amplify biases present in the data it was trained on. Prompt engineering is our tool to tackle these challenges head-on.

2: The Art of Crafting Specific Prompts

Specificity in prompts is paramount. Consider this: asking ChatGPT to "write about dogs" will likely yield broad and generic content. In contrast, requesting "Compose a 500-word article on the history of Dachshunds" provides a clear and specific direction.

Vague prompts lead to vague responses, while specific prompts guide ChatGPT to generate more relevant and accurate content. This art lies in providing enough context without stifling creativity.

3: The Power of Detailed Prompts

In certain scenarios, specificity alone isn't enough. In order to receive more valuable answers it helps to be more detailed about the information you are looking for.

Imagine you're using ChatGPT for a data analysis task. A vague request might result in a surface-level overview, but a detailed prompt, such as: "Analyze the quarterly sales data from Q1 2023 to Q4 2023 and identify trends, outliers and potential areas for improvement" sets the stage for comprehensive insights.

Providing more detailed prompts, guide the AI chat model to provide more thorough and informative responses. More detailed prompts assist the AI model by leaving no room for ambiguity and this is one of the methods to ensure the you receive more valuable and relevant answers.

4: Techniques for Effective Prompt Engineering

Crafting effective prompts is a skill that can be learned and improved upon over time. Start by understanding your goals and tailoring prompts to your specific needs.

By utilizing keywords, providing context-setting information and including clear instructions in your prompts, you can become more effective at prompt engineering.

For example, let's say you are trying to write a blog article on a particular topic and you would like it to rank highly on Google. To do so, it helps to include certain keywords, have a well worded, SEO friendly title and be 1500 words long. If you include all this information in your prompt, you will receive an answer that  better matches your expectations.

Example ChatGPT prompt: "Write a 1500 word blog article on {topic}. The article should have an SEO friendly and enticing title. Include the following keywords in the article: {list keywords}"

It also helps to work step by step. For example:

ChatGPT Prompt: "Provide the outline for a blog article on {topic} which is targeted at {this audience}"

Then use ChatGPT to write one section of your blog post at a time. This helps it to stay relevant and on topic without overwhelming the model.

Here is the next prompt to use: "Continue writing the blog and start with this section: {section from answer above}"

Balancing specificity and detail is an art that improves with practice.

Experiment with different approaches to find what works best for your unique requirements.

5: Give ChatGPT a Role

If you think about it carefully, many of the questions you ask can be answered in many different ways, depending on the person you are asking it to.

To help you get more appropriate answers to your questions, assign ChatGPT a specialist role.

By assigning ChatGPT with a specialist role, it helps the AI understand the context of your thinking and thereby helps the AI model provide more appropriate, expert information in a specific area.

For example, start your prompt by assigning a role to the AI, such as you are an experienced, professional LinkedIn online marketer" before asking it to help with your task.

Here is a more detailed example using the role assign tip above: "you are an experienced, professional LinkedIn online marketer create a series of LinkedIn posts that educate your audience about the importance of life insurance".

Here is another example, using a specialst role to provide more appropriate and relevant answers: "as an experienced organisational psychologist what tips would you give to improve employee motivation?".

6: Clarity & Conciseness

The accuracy of ChatGPT's responses also depends on the complexity of the language used in the input prompts. If the language is too complex or ambiguous, ChatGPT may generate inaccurate responses.

Providing clear and specific input prompts can help improve the accuracy of its responses.

A simple prompt like "Write a report on the renewable energy market" can result in vague and possibly unwanted answers. Instead try using a more in-depth prompt that describes exactly what you would like, for example: "Write an in-depth report on the renewable energy market, include a detailed SWOT analysis and a summary of the opportunities in this market in Dallas, Texas"

Another expert tip is to be as exact as possible regarding what information you would like to obtain from ChatGPT. For example: "Summarize the latest trends in the renewable energy market, focusing on solar and wind technologies. Include statistics on market growth, key players, emerging technologies, and potential investment opportunities."

If you aren't receiving the answers you expect, you can help the AI model improve it's answers by making your prompts as short and concise as possible, while still providing context.

You can also provide feedback to the model explaining what information you would like included in your answers or even telling it to recheck it's work.

7: Provide Style & Tone Guidelines

Many times, when you read content produced by ChatGPT, it has clearly been written by AI, instead of a human. To improve the professionalism and writing quality of your answers, you can add some style and tone guidelines to your prompts.

For example: "Write an article in the style of Sherlock Holmes explaining why mastering cash flow management is so important"

Another example, using tone to help get improved writing from AI models: "Write a 300 word LinkedIn post using a professional and inspiring tone to explain how being empathetic helps leaders."

8. Fine-Tuning (Teaching Your AI) - for Prompt Optimization

To take prompt engineering a step further, consider fine-tuning ChatGPT models. Fine-tuning involves training the model on custom datasets or providing it with clear examples of what information you expect in its answers.

This process can significantly enhance prompt understanding by the AI model and response quality.

For example this prompt explains what kind of information you want and the kind of format you would like your answer in: "generate a list of the best 10 financial ratios to analyse the performance of a manufacturing company. For example: Solvency Ratio (Total Assets less Total Liabilities)", give it a try to see for yourself.

Harness the power of step by step thinking to help kick your AI into Chain of Thought reasoning. This means, when we ask ChatGPT a question, if first thinks through it's answer step by step before answering you and this helps it reason and therefor improves it's answers.

An example of how you can harness Chain of Thought reasoning is to start your ChatGPT prompt as follows: "Always spend a few sentences explaining step by step BEFORE you try to answer this question:"

9. Make Your AI Check It's Work

Want to make your AI check it's own work before answering you?

Using advanced prompting techniques, you can prompt ChatGPT to check its own work and provide you with better answers.

It's helpful to assign a role for AI to take in order to check its work - think along the lines of a specialist / expert, a specific age group such as 5 year olds or a specific audience like business owners.

Here is an example prompt: "Using a step by step approach explain how I calculate the cash flow health of my business. Before you print your answer, review it from the view of business owner with limited cash flow knowledge and then rewrite if necessary before answering."

10. Answer in Tables

To get simpler, easier to understand comparisons you can ask ChatGPT to answer in table format:

For example: "Provide GDP growth in USA from 2010 to 2020 in tabular format"

11: Ethical Considerations in Prompt Engineering

With great power comes great responsibility. Ethical considerations in prompt engineering are crucial.

Content creators should be mindful of the prompts they craft. Biases present in prompts can lead to biased responses from AI models like ChatGPT, reinforcing harmful stereotypes or misinformation.

Mitigating bias in prompt design is an essential step in responsible AI usage. Be aware of the potential consequences of your prompts and strive for fairness and accuracy.

You can easily remove bias by prompting ChatGPT to remove it.

For example: "Remove all personal identifying information (e.g. names, gender, race, religion, age) from candidates to reduce unconscious bias. Once removed, analyse the candidates that applied for the Operations Manager job providing a list of the top 5 with an explanation of why you chose them".

Another example to exclude bias or diversity free thinking when answering your questions is: "Provide a list of 10 initiatives HR can do to improve hiring outcomes, while ensuring more diversity and bias free hiring"

12. Custom Instructions

A great time saver when you start to harness the true power of AI regularly, is to set-up custom instructions. This means you can set-up specific prompts which ChatGPT will take into account, before it answers you, to help it provide exactly what you seek.

Setting Up ChatGPT Custom Instructions:

a) Open ChatGPT (you can get your free account here: https://chat.openai.com)
b) Click the three dots next to your name, then click "Settings and Beta."
c) Enable custom instructions feature by enabling the “Custom instructions” toggle button.
d) Click the three dots again, and select "Custom instructions."
e) Set up and add your custom instructions.

For example:

"You are a kind, loving spiritual teacher who's goal is to make people happy and teach them how to be more content and happy in life". This style of custom prompt will instruct ChatGPT to provide answers based on this persona.

By giving your AI a persona, you instruct it to answer your questions in the tone and style of the persona you assign to it.

Conclusion:

In the world of AI, prompt engineering is the key to unlocking the full potential of ChatGPT and other AI language models.

Crafting specific and detailed prompts isn't just an art, it's a science that can elevate your AI-powered endeavors.

Remember, the quality of your interactions with ChatGPT hinges on the prompts you provide. By mastering the art of prompt engineering, you empower yourself to harness the full capabilities of this incredible technology.
